I purchased a roof top bike rack today. The rack is a modular Yakima system that consisted of Q-Towers, Q-Clips, 48″ Crossbars, 2 Copperhead Bike Carriers, Wheel Fork and a 38″ Wind Fairing. This configuration can carry two bikes. There is room to add a third bike carrier if needed.

The first time attachment to my 97 Jetta GLS took about 90 minutes as I took my time. It is rock solid and I have no worries about putting my bike up there. Once assembled, it takes only a few seconds to attach or remove the rack.

Thought(s) of the day: It is amazing how different you can feel between a ride. Today I sat on Jim’s wheel the entire ride. Felt crappy… but to look at the numbers above it isn’t obvious. Saturday I rode pretty hard and felt great. A bit tired today perhaps. It’s all Good!

Jim if you are reading this…. treat yourself to a new bike. You deserve it! My ears will thank you over and over =)

Ride Description: Holland Hundred 2004 – 67 mile route.

Riding partners: Rode the majority of the day with Mike Nagelkerke. Mike and I wanted to push ourselves a bit while the rest of the gang was also there… Jim Mahaney, Jim Carson, John Percival, Marv., most of them have many more miles than I do and for them it was a day to hang out and shoot the breeze with old friends.

Thought(s) of the day: This year’s ride went a lot better than last year. Of course, this year total mileage to date is much higher than this time last year. Kept a good pace all day. Slowed down a bit coming home on 66th St. but did our best to keep at least 18mph but it hurt pretty good =)

Now the quest to top 1000 miles is officially here. Perhaps this next week will be the week!

Thought(s) of the day: Last planned ride before Saturday’s Holland Hundred Bike Tour. Mileage for the season is now just over 800. Feeling better on the bike with each ride out. Today was an easy ride didn’t set out with any specific goals other than to enjoy an easy ride.

Ride Description: Odd Route. Started out as the Saugatuck to Old Allegan and had planned to go out to Lincoln but the look of rain on the way caused us to head north on Graafschap and the turn west on 140th to 64th. 64th North to 147th. Then we did one small loop from 147th to 66th to 142nd to 64th and then 64th back to 147th to get our desired mileage for the day.

Riding partners: Jim Mahaney

Thought(s) of the day: Felt pretty good today even though I felt a bit tired starting off. Still planning on one more ride Thursday before the Holland Hundred on Saturday.

Jul 12

My first “sanctioned” bike tour of the year is this coming Saturday, the Holland Hundred Bike Tour (HH). What a change a year can bring. Last year going into the HH, I had ridden 6 times for a total of 158.93 miles. This year through yesterday I have ridden 21 times for a total of 775.69 miles and I am planning on riding on Tuesday and Thursday of this week before the HH so the total should still go up a bit before then.

Thought(s) of the day: I have read the term Dead wood as a way some describe the ride of a Carbon Road bike. Dead Wood is really the best way to describe my legs today. Got dropped several times today and never really felt very good. I hope to get in 3 more rides before next Saturday’s Holland Hundred.
